The book I read for the month of April, as part of 12 books in 2012 was the book Creative Correction by Lisa Whelchel.
This book covered a wide range of topics relating to the kids and their actions and was full of practical applications relating to the correction of negative behaviors. Not every reader will agree with every discipline technique (called “corrections” in this book). Some of the discipline and expectations might seem rather strict, but with any book take away what is helpful and applies to your situation and let the rest go.
I found several helpful things I’m planning to stat doing with my kids. One of the ideas I was impressed with was job cards that get punched as each job is completed. I’m also planning to start a happy marble jar and a sad marble jar. When each kid gets their happy jar full they will get a McDonald’s Happy Meal. Read the book for many more interesting ideas related to kids.
One paragraph that really stood out to me as I was reading the book and seemed to describe me all to well was, “When our children are young, it’s easy to become myopic, or shortsighted, in our vision. We zoom around, putting out the fires in front of us, always keeping a fire extinguisher handy, but never taking the time to think about installing a water-spinkler system for the future. It’s important however, that we stop every so often in the midst of fire fighting to look down the road. Are we still guiding our children in the right direction?”
For the month of May I’m planning to read the book Be Your Own Shrink.
