I tried making laundry soap for the first time this week. I must say I was impressed, it smells so good, only takes 3 ingredients and was super easy to make. I have an HE washer and I was glad to find out it is safe to use in and HE and is actually a good soap to use as it it isn’t super sudsy.
One recipe yields about 3 cups of soap. I figured out how much it costs to mix up a batch and it is $1.65 per recipe, thanks to my Fels-naptha episode I paid slightly less than that. If you use 1 Tablespoon per load of wash (the recommended amount) you will have enough of soap for 48 loads and will be paying only $0.03 per load! Wow! I have a bottle of Tide here that is for 32 loads and I paid around $5.00 for it, making the Tide soap $0.16 a load. I have heard die hard Tide fans even prefer the homemade soap over Tide when they made the switch!
Now you might say a savings of $0.13 a load isn’t much savings, but over time it will add up to quiet a few dollars.
- 1 Fells-naptha bar soap
- 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
- ½ cup Borax
- Grate bar of Fells-naptha. (I used my salad shooter for this step, a grater or even food processor would also work great)
- Mix grated soap with washing soda and borax.
- Use 1 Tablespoon per load of laundry.
