Do It Yourself: Awesome Homemade Tub and Shower Cleaner
Who likes a sparkly clean bathroom without a lot of effort to get it looking that way? I can’t say the bathroom is my favorite area to clean, but I do love when it shines.
Over time I had some cleaners that when I sprayed them in the tub and shower, the smell was that strong it burned my throat just breathing while in the same room. When reader Kay sent me this tub and shower cleaner recipe, I knew I had to try it as it took only took two common ingredients that I already have on hand! I also knew that with this recipe there wouldn’t be fumes that would make breathing difficult.
On bathroom cleaning day I mixed up a batch of this cleaner, and with just one use I was instantly in love. My tub, shower and vanity top all became as shiny and new looking as the day they were on the day of installation and with any nasty strong chemical smells.
What I really loved about this shower cleaner is that the color in it shows you exactly where you have sprayed and cleaned as you go along. Another excellent thing about this product is there is no extra scrubbing. This cleaner just attacked any scum, and all I needed to do was wipe away to reveal a sparkling clean bathroom!

How to Make Tub and Shower Cleaner
12 ounces white vinegar
12 ounces liquid, blue dawn detergent As you can see from the picture above I didn’t have blue Dawn when I mixed up my recipe but instead I used Gain soap.
Directions:
1. Heat vinegar in microwave until hot and pour into squirt bottle.
2. Add the Dawn soap. Put the lid on and gently shake to incorporate.
3. You now have a powerful cleaning product that will melt soap scum and tub and shower buildup, clean sinks, appliances and just about anything. Just spray it on, scrub, rinse and be amazed. For tough soap scum build-up, spray the mixture on and allow it to sit as long as overnight. Then, scrub and rinse.

Thank you so much for posting this recipe! I made it today as a total skeptic, and I got stains off my shower that have been there for three years that I thought were permanent! Amazing!

Please can you let me know what Dawn and Gain are …. what are they meant to clean? ‘cos we don’t get it in SA
Thanks

Dawn and Gain are dish soaps. Not the kind used in the dishwasher but the kind you use when you handwash the dishes. Hope that answers your question.

I have also used this as a spot cleaner on carpet and furniture. It works great. I would recommend this to anyone.

This is non concentrated Dawn, right? Or does it not matter?

Jacki, I just use regular dishwashing soap like Dawn or any brand. It is straight out of the bottle so it would be non concentrated. Hope that answers your question.

I use this same concoction on my carpets…it pulls out tough stains and neutralizes any odors in the carpet!! Also so far it hasn’t messed up my carpet cleaner either! I started by pouring it on and a scrub brush on my hands and knees to make sure it was gonna work the first time I used it then decide to try about a half a cup to a cup with hot water in my carpet cleaner to do the whole room. For tough stains I would suggest using it with a scrub brush or just spraying it on straight and letting it sit for 10 minutes then do your thing!

I just tried this and it seems to work as well if not better than any other cleaner I have used. The only downfall is that I should have worn a face mask when spraying as it seems to linger in the air and I could feel it in my throat after spraying and caused me to cough. Would this work using a homemade natural dish soap instead of the commercial soap?

I’m so excited to hear that you love this cleaner as much as I do! Thanks for taking time to comment and yes I think you should be able to use any kind of dish soap. I know I used kinds other than Dawn but haven’t tried it with a natural soap but I think it would still work as well.

What if I don’t have dawn? Can I use any other soap
Coupon Cutting Mom says
Yes, I have found other soaps to work too. Last recipe I mixed up I used Gain.
