This morning I turned these bags of apples into…
… homemade applesauce!
Have you ever tried making applesauce? It really is very easy and it tastes so much better than store bought applesauce. Not to mention it is cheaper to make your own and also healthier for you than bought applesauce.
How to make your own homemade applesauce
Wash the apples and with a sharp paring knife cut them into quarters. No need to peel or core them. Just cut them up.
Place the quartered apples in a large kettle. Add water to cover at least half of the apples. Cook for 15 minutes or until the apples are soft.
After the apples are soft, drain the water off and place the apples in your Victoria Strainer. Turn the handle and out will come your golden applesauce, while the skin, seeds etc. comes out the other end. As you can see from the picture, my daughter had a great time turning the apples through the strainer.
After all the apples are run through the stainer, you can add sugar to your desired sweetness level. The applesauce could then either be canned or frozen. I place my applesauce in freezer containers and freeze it.
We enjoy pulling the applesauce out of the freezer all winter long. I will often pack it in my daughters school lunch, the kids will sometimes eat it for breakfast or we use it to make our favorite Jell-O salad.
What food have you processed recently? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
