Are you looking for fun ways to inspire your beginning reader or even motivate one who may be struggling with reading? I think that reading is the best academic skill any child can learn and Reading Eggs makes learning to read fun. In fact when the kids are playing this game they are having so much fun they don’t even realize they are learning.
When I was ask to review Reading Eggs I knew both of my daughters would enjoy this program. My 7-year old is a real bookworm who reads through books as fast as we can get them for her. When I saw there are 0ver 700 books available in Reading Eggs I figured that should keep her busy for a while. And I was hoping that this program would put my 4-year old on the road to becoming a bookworm as well.
The 7-year old said her favorite area is the Reading Eggspress. This part of the program is geared towards kids 7 – 13 years old. With over 700 books, 200 lessons, and 100 quest type games there is plenty here for her to learn and lots of books to read.
I liked that when we started this program that there was a placement test. When she completed the test, the program then start her at the level the test showed her to be at. You can also manually change this if you feel your child was placed at a level that was to easy or difficult. And for younger kids there is no need to do the test as they can just start at the beginning of the program.
My 4-year old started out at the beginning of the Reading Eggs program and I must say she is addicted to this site. I’m not complaining though as she is learning lots of educational things. She started out on the map and each stop or number is a lesson where a particular letter and sound is covered.
Within each lesson the animated character Sam the Ant guides them through the activities. In the beginning the activities include clicking on the correct letter as it appears on the screen. Then there is a dot-to-dot activity for each letter and they are then able to move on to identifying both the upper and lower case letter in the lesson. After this there is vocabulary book to work at. For my 4-year old daughter this consisted of finding the words that started with the letter in each lesson. At the end of the lesson they get to crack the egg and fun critter is revealed. This critter sings a funny song consisting of words with the sound they learned in that lesson.
In both Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress students earn eggs that can then be spent on items to decorate their house or clothing for their avatar. And my kids, being the typical girls that they are can spend a long time dressing their avatars. I love the fact that if they want to buy more clothes they need to do some lessons or reading to earn more eggs to make their purchase.
There are also fun areas where they can head to play. While these are not lessons they will still be practicing the things they have learned up to this point. These areas include a playroom, arcade, and the park.
With summer coming on Reading Eggs would be an excellent program for kids just starting out learning the letters and sounds or would also be perfect for kids on summer vacation to practice their reading. With this program you won’t be hearing complaints of boredom but rather you may have to fight to get in line to use the computer.
Reading Eggs is offering a two-week FREE trial to this educational program. Sign up here. No credit card required.
